Lesson Plans
August 28th to Sept. 8th

Period 2,4, and 9  Mon., Wed., Friday, Wed., Friday
Period 3,5, and 10 Tues., Thursday, Tues, Thurs., Friday.

All classes on September 8th.

Monday/ Tuesday August 28th and 29th - Day 1

  1. Start with a short reading assignment and answer skyward questions on the Big Bang. https://www.esa.int/esaKIDSen/SEMSZ5WJD1E_OurUniverse_0.html
  2. We will watch the two videos from my web page regarding the beginning of the universe and how scientists explain the start today.
  3. Review difference between astronomy and astrology and rotation and revolution.
  4. Discussion on the force of gravity in our universe.  Students will see the formula for gravity and complete an interactivity - Gravity Variations Interactive (663.0K)  Also students will play with a Phet simulation on gravity.  The purpose is to see how size and distance effects gravity.
  5. Students will participate in a classroom demonstration of the beginning of the Universe.  All students will be given a circle to represent density and size of an abject in space.  We will start in a singular and explode outward.  The students will visually see how large dense objects capture other objects close to them. We will talk about black holes and spaghettification.
  6. Notes will be given on the 3 pieces of evidence scientists use to support the Big Bang Theory.
  7. Homework is a worksheet of terms we will use in our study of astronomy.  Homework is due Friday September 8th!  I will accept it any day before but will not accept it after September 8th!!  A paper copy will be given in class and extra copies will be offered everyday we have class.  A copy is attached to the web page.

Wed/ Thursday August 30th and 31st - Day 2

  1. Go over the list of students that still need to turn in safety sheet.
  2. Review questions on skyward about the Big Bang theory. Watch a short video clip to see visually again the Big Bang Theory.
  3. We will discuss the size of our universe and the three pieces of evidence we use to support the Big Bang Theory.  (Review Notes)
  4. Students will create a flowchart using terms from our homework sheet due September 8th.  Students will have the option to work alone or in groups. Work must be completed in class.
  5. We will add to our notes on how galaxies are formed (shapes and sizes), how stars are formed (fusion, fission), and how planets are created. We will focus on the Solar Nebular theory. We will repeat our class simulation of the Big Bang theory and the effects of gravity.
  6. Homework will be to complete a skyward assignment on distances in our universe.  Students will be allowed to use any source necessary to find the answers. The assignment will be opened until September 5th at 8:25 in the morning.

Friday/ Tuesday September 1st and 5th. Day 1

  1. Go over the list of students that still need to turn in safety sheet.
  2. Review evidence that supports the Big Bang Theory, geography terms in the universe, and the effects of distance and density on gravity.
  3. Notes on the life cycle of a star.
  4. Students will be asked to create a one page info graphic of the notes. We will display the info graphics around the room.  Students will have the option to complete on paper with markers and color pencils or create a computer visualization.
  5. No homework if finished in class, those not done have time to finish and return to me asap.

Wednesday / Thursday Sept 6th and Sept 7 Day 2

  1. Go over the list of students that still need to turn in safety sheet.
  2. Go over who has and has not turned in term paper due on Friday.
  3. Today we will focus on distance in outer space.  Students will learn more about astronomical units and scientific notation.
  4. Students will translate from large or small numbers to scientific notation and reverse.  We will add, subtract, multiply and divide scientific numbers.  We will have several word problems that use scientific notation.
  5. We will also watch several videos about the size of different items in the universe.

Friday - September 8th - All classes

  1. Skyward quiz - 10 questions - students can use their notes only!!!
Folded solar system activity - theses will be hanging from the ceiling of our classroom. Please bring your color pencils or markers.
