Earth Science Class Mrs. Moore Lesson Plans Nov. 12th - Nov. 21st

Earth’s Systems (Geology)
Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence from rock strata for how the geologic time scale is used to organize Earth’s 4.6 billion-year-old history
Develop a model to describe the cycling of Earth’s materials and the flow of energy that drives this process
Construct an explanation based on evidence for how geoscience processes have changed Earth’s surface at varying time and spatial scales
Analyze and interpret data on the distribution of fossils and rocks, continental shapes, and seafloor structures to provide evidence of the past plate motions
Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for how the uneven distributions of Earth’s mineral, energy, groundwater resources are the result of past and current geoscience processes

We will continue with our unit on Geology.  Look at our Phenomena picture and ask questions
and hypothesise  the answer. What do we need to know to figure out the past? Why would be want
to know our past? Who would value the information and why?


Wednesday/ Thursday
Partner activity with geologic time. ( 5 minutes)
Review Geology lessons and our unit on Geologic History. Relative/absolute dating, historical geology principles, and geologic time.
Geology slide project. Project will be explained and time given in class to work.  Project due on Friday.

Friday - All Classes
Turn in our slide presentation. Share with each other and give our opinions of each others work.
Review mineral and rocks by name.  
Develop a model to describe the cycling of Earth’s materials and the flow of energy that drives this process.
Igneous rocks - cooling of magma/lava
Metamorphic rocks - heat and pressure
Sedimentary rocks
Homework is to research one of our rocks or minerals.  Students will need create an ad selling their chosen mineral as the best Christmas gift.  Paper advertisement is due on Monday. We will post these around the room. Extra credit commercials are an option.

Rock and Mineral identification lab simulation.  Students will complete numerous tests on our know rocks and minerals.  Students will evaluate the testing process looking for the best way to collect information about unknown substances and verifying then substance to the best of our ability.

Monday/ Tuesday
Student will look at our petrified cotton balls. We will discuss what what they tell us about the past. We will revisit a phenomena picture and ask questions from above.
Short skyward assignment. Walk around the room and look at rocks and minerals.
5 ½ minute video on Earth’s History.
Mrs. Moore will demonstrate/ give notes on Historical Geology from 4.6 BIllion years to today.  Time will be divided into four eras, with three of the eras divided into periods.
Students will manipulate sheets of paper with geological events on them in order to create a timeline of Earth’s History. Participation points will be given.
Students will read quietly the Geological TImeline Project - next week Tues/Wed.  Worth 25 points. Class time will be given to work on the project. Those not focussed on the project will have to complete the work outside of class.  Students will choose to work in groups of 1 or 2.
If we have time we will use our geo timeline cards to line up in the back of the room.  Can we get it correct? Rewards for the classes that can complete this in a timely manner.
Wednesday/ Thursday
Start with a short skyward assignment. (5 minutes)
Group activity using our geo timeline cards. (7 minutes)
Re read our Geological TImeline Project quietly to ourselves.  Students will have 30 minutes to work on the project in class. A class participation grade will be given.
As a class work through the Evidence of Evolution packet - Fossils, embryology, comparative anatomy, and molecular biology. Packet will be  collected and graded. Students are required to complete all work on the packet by following along in class.


Friday/ Monday
Play it by ear, we will see how far we get in the week and move on from that point. If we need
to slow down and repeat our material we will.  IF not the following will be completed.

Start with a quiet  worksheet on Geologic history.
Read an article about Climate Change.  We will discuss the claim of the article and the evidence if it is valid or not.
Students will be asked to agree or disagree with statements and support their reasoning.
We will end with a video on the evolution of animals in the ocean, ocean to land animals, and dinosaur to birds.

Tuesday/ Wednesday
Depending on how we have progressed we may or may not accomplish the following.

Show and share our geo timelines and display them in the classroom.
Start looking at the rock cycle - what does it tell us about the past?  What is the cycling process and how can that give us clues about the past and the future?  
We will reconstruct geo history from numerous examples.
No homework!!!

Monday/ Tuesday
Student will start with dipping their cotton balls in the salt water to continue our petrification process. (3 minutes)
We will dig out our molds and create our casts of the pennies in class. 10 minutes
Skyward assignment on relative, absolute dating, fossils, and minerals. 8 minutes
Visible Geology activity with relative dating.  Students will be asked to create a history with 5 layers that have an angular unconformity, a fault, and an intrusion. Students will create a problem to solve.  We will exchange computers and try to construct an explanation of the geo history of the area. Score will be participation. 15 minutes
Students will walk around looking at minerals and rocks starting to learn them by sight. We will make a list of physical properties that we observe  in our minerals and our rocks. Students will complete paper listing one physical characteristics for each rock and mineral. They will be asked to write a short paragraph about the claim on the back of the sheet as homework. 15 minutes
We will watch a short video on geologic time. 5  minutes
Students will start our geo timeline activity by graphing our Eras( Precambrian, Paleozoic, Mesozoic, Cenozoic)  on a spreadsheet. 15 minutes ALL GOOD Graphs get candy!


Wednesday/ Thursday
Student will start with dipping their cotton balls in the salt water to continue our petrification process.
We will have a practice quiz of the names of the rocks, minerals, and common Illinois fossils.  This will not be graded but used to guide further studies.
Students will organize 26 events into chronological order in an activity.  We will use this information to create a visual timeline in class.
As a group we will subdivide our timelines into the four eras. Students will work in groups of two or one by their own choice.  We will add five more geological events as a group and then the students will have to finish the rest. The students’ work will be to add 20 more events to the timeline to show Earth’s development to today.  A list of events will be shared with the student to guide their choices.

Friday - We have our second College trip to Knox College, Galesburg Illinois  All students are going!!!
