New Unit - Earth Systems - Plate Tectonics, Earthquakes and Volcanoes
Day 1- (Wed/Thurs Jan 3rd,and 4th)
Skyward assignment pre test.  Pangaea interactivity (2). Phenomena demonstration with
water of different colors mixing and not mixing. Start notes on Plate tectonics using the
continental drift PowerPoint presentation with note sheet.  We will start this presentation and
finish next week.  The presentation and the notes can be found on my web page.  We will
stop with 10 minutes left and work through a winter experiment; Does hot water or cold
water freeze faster.  Students will set up a spreadsheet table to collect data.  The data table
will be due next week. Requirements will be a title, x and y axis labels, a key, and the
data correctly displayed. A homework worksheet on Earth’s internal structure will be
given and will be due on the first day students have class next week. Homework is
attached to skyward plus a paper copy will be given.  Students will need markers, crayons,
colored pencils or markers to complete homework.

Friday Jan. 5th - special Google VR presentation!!!

Day 1- (Mon/Tues Jan 8th and 9th)
Skyward assignment start and collect homework worksheet on Earth’s internal structure.
We will discuss our phenomena demonstration from last week.Continue our continental drift
presentation with notes. We will work on our winter experiment and complete our data
tables.  We will analyze our data and write conclusion statements. Students will turn in
notes from the continental drift presentation for a participation grade and the graph will be
given 5 point in the grade book. If we need more time we can continue next class.

½ day all classes  Jan 10th- Pie plate activity - all students will get a paper plate
and must create a model of the Earth’s internal structure.  If time allows students
can use class time to read and complete questions from our first article reading for
the quarter.

Day 2-  (Thurs/Fri Jan 11th and 12th)
Review or finish continental drift PowerPoint presentation with notes.  Students will be
partnered up in groups and we will again talk about our phenomena.  Students will be asked
to diagram and present what they understand is taking place in the phenomena.  Students
will be able to question one another on their diagrams and explanations.  Following all
explanations students will revise their work to turn in as a grade. Rubric will be given out in
class.  Homework is a convection current worksheet.

Day 1- (Tues/Wed Jan 16th and 17th) Turn in convection current worksheet. In class
work day on slide presentation of continental drift to plate tectonics. We will start our
second winter experiment - does the increase concentration of salt in water decrease the
freezing point in a linear pattern. Basically does putting out more salt reduce ice
development more?  Is there a point where more salt is not improving the ice melting?
We will research - make a hypothesis - and develop an experiment to prove our
hypothesis.  Homework is to prepare our data table to collect record our data.

Day 2- (Thurs/Fri Jan 18th and 19th)
We will put our data in our spreadsheets and graph our results from our 2nd winter
experiment.  Students will have to complete a skyward assignment identifying constants,
controls, and independent/dependent manipulated variables.  Students will have the
remaining time in class to complete the slide presentation of continental drift to plate
tectonics. The presentation is due no later than 8 pm on Saturday Jan 20th.  I am not
grading this projects for the rest of the quarter, No Late projects.

Earth Science Class Mrs. Moore Lesson Plans 12-11 to 12-20

Monday Wednesday- period 2, 4, and 9
Tuesday Thursday 3, 5, and 10
Friday - All classes
Monday - period 2, 4, and 9
Tuesday - period 3, 5, and  10

Monday/ Tuesday
Start with a skyward assignment (10 minutes). 20 minutes - practice mineral identification characterics. Time to ask questions about any of the tests.  20 minutes - identify an unknown minerals characteristics. 20 minutes - review safety skills and lighting burners.  We will review procedures for our flame test lab.  Students will have a safety skyward assignment to complete before they can participate in the lab. Students will be given alternate assignments if not prepared or there are any concerns with safety,

Wednesday Thursday
Flame test in class.  Student will take notes on the colors of the flames for 20 minutes.  Students will have to match chemical names with the on a lab sheet.  Safety will be the number one focus of this class.  Any misbehavior or talk of misbehavior will not be tolerated.  Safety in the classroom will be the most important issue today.  Please dress with close toe shoes and refrain from excessively loose clothing.  Students will be required to wear safety goggles the entire class period.  Long hair must be tied up.  Please reduce the amount of perfumes or hairspray for the day.  Students not considered dressed safely for the class will be given an alternate assignment.  Again safety is our number one concern.

Friday - Mystery minerals day.  We will try to identify rocks and minerals that we have not already talked about in class.  We will identify the rock/mineral and lean the many uses of the items.

Monday/ Tuesday  Start with a skyward assignment.  Continue with an interactive on the computer https://www.learner.org/interactives/rockcycle/   The interactive has an assessment that will be graded.  It can be taken more than once.  Students must screenshot the results or show me the screen for the score.  This will be our last score in the grade book for the quarter - 15 points.

Earth Science Class Mrs. Moore Lesson Plans 12-4 to 12-8

Monday- period 2, 4, and 9
Tuesday 3, 5, and 10  Mrs. Moore is gone!!
Wed. Thurs Friday - All classes

Monday/Tuesday  Start with a skyward assignment.  We will complete a walking demo of evolution on our planet earth (26 pieces). Students will work quietly and independently on a geologic history worksheet.  We will conclude with a few videos on human evolution past and future. Students will be asked to take notes on the videos and write questions they might have after watching the material. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEiYrYAu3Ec

Wednesday - Prepare for our mineral/rock id lab.  We will walk through the process of identification looking at color, mass, density, volume, HCl, magnetism, diaphaneity, tenacity, smell, luster, cleavage/fracture, hardness, crystal pattern, formula, streak, and the flame test. Students will complete one mineral/ rock id test.  Students will be asked to complete a homework worksheet, due at the beginning of class tomorrow. Students will not continue on the mineral/rock identification testing until the worksheet is completed.

Thursday Complete at least 7 mineral/rock identification tests. A homework rock cycle worksheet will be given, due at the beginning of class tomorrow.

Friday-  Students will be asked to complete at least 5 more mineral/rock identification tests. Students will be instructed on our flame test. A demonstration of the flame test will be shown and students will need to complete a safety worksheet about the demonstration and return it on Monday to participate in the flame test lab.
