Day 1 Jan. 22nd and 23rd
Start with a short skyward review assignment.  Review missing work and pass back corrected materials. Review Continental to Plate Tectonics slide assignment, 15 minutes in class time to work on project. Project will be due Monday Jan 26th by 3:00- No exceptions. Students will complete a convection current demonstration in partnered groups. A picture drawing will be required as evidence of completion.  Students will watch a group demo on the largest force that is moving the plates.  As a group we will watch a short video on plate tectonics and earthquakes. Homework is to complete the Locating Earthquakes and Volcanoes on Planet Earth activity - due by the end of the week. This homework requires understanding how to plot latitude and longitude on a map.  It does not need to be precise but in the general area.  The point is to see a pattern of the earthquakes and volcanoes on our planet Earth.

Day 2 Jan. 24th and 25th -
Start by reading a few skyward questions, then watch a short video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=316&v=QDqskltCixA), followed by answering the questions. Second today we will spend time looking at USGS.gov and current earthquakes. Third together graph earthquake foci information and figure out what it is telling us about the Earth’s crust. Notes will be given on terminology with plate tectonics and earthquakes. Any remaining time will  be used as quiet homework time for the location Earthquakes and Volcanoes on Planet Earth activity or the Continental Drift to Plate Tectonics slide presentation.

Day 1  Jan. 26th and 29th
Virtual Earthquakes Day -  Students will read seismograph readouts and identify the location of the earthquake epicenter. http://www.sciencecourseware.com/VirtualEarthquake/VQuakeExecute.html
We will work through two simulations.  Students will be asked to complete a simulation on their own and screenshot the results to stallman@galesburg205.org  Homework is to complete article 2 and 3 by next Friday.  Any extra time can be used to complete past homework.  If time we will watch an earthquake video.

Day 2  Jan 30th and Jan. 31st
Start with a short skyward review assignment. Students will look at our homework assignment on mapping volcanoes and earthquakes.  We will discuss who where and what should be done with this information.  Students will have 15 minutes to build card houses.  Student will then be asked to research what makes a building safer in an earthquake.  Students will be asked to design a toothpick building that meets particular criteria that will withstand primary, secondary, and surface waves.  Homework will be to learn from mistakes and redesign the building for our next class. Partner groups or individuals will be allowed.

Day 1- Feb 1st and Feb. 2nd Student presentations of our designs.  When completed students will have a short skyward assignment to complete about the seismic safe structures.  Homework will be to color our Earth plate tectonic boundary map again!!  There will be four questions to go with it this time.

***  The flu is all around us.  If I have to miss school because of illness I will leave Super Volcano to watch.  There is a worksheet packet that will go with the video.

I will revamp the lessons when I return.  Hopefully I will not need to use this alternative plan.
