Lesson Plans January 9th to January 13th 2017 Mrs. Moore Earth Science

Monday -Thursday Period 2,4, and 9
Tuesday - Friday Period 3,5, and 10
Wednesday science in we will complete practice materials for the Illinois State Science Test. Students will remain in advisory classes because of the shorten day.

Day 1 - Skyward assignment. Rock cycle diagram. Go over model rubric and grade our convection current models from last week. Pie model of the Earth activity. All students will create a model of the layers of the Earth to scale. Students will subdivide the layers of the Earth from just crust, mantle, core to add lithosphere, asthenosphere, and outer core. We will place the convection current in the asthenosphere.  Notes on Plate Tectonics with slide presentation. Students will create clay models of plate boundaries; convergent, divergent, and transform boundaries. Students will take pictures of models add them to the notes.  Students will be allowed to participate in a plate boundary game and make plate tectonic puzzle pieces.  Homework is watch the two small videos on my web page. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1GWz_XHWEo  and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbtAXW-2nz0 . Please answer the question on the skyward assignment called Cont. Drift and Plate Tectonic info.

Day 2 - Skyward assignment/ Rock cycle diagram. Review notes from previous lesson using pom poms. We will watch the video The Early Earth and Plate Tectonics (5 minutes).  Students will be asked to complete earthquake volcano mapping worksheet. While working students will be asked
  1. Why was Wegener's original idea about continental drift referred to as intuition and not science?
  2. What did Wegener find that he believed was evidence to support his theory?
  3. Why didn't others think that his findings constituted evidence?
  4. How did the new information about the ocean floor support Wegener's theory?
  5. How do the rocks at Lake Mead support the theory of plate tectonics?
  6. What other evidence would help convince you that the theory of plate tectonics was real?
What is not completed in class will be homework. If time allows we will try a quizlet - https://quizlet.com/17554628/flashcards.

NGSS
HS-ESS2.B.3 ( High School Earth and Space Sciences ): Plate tectonics is the unifying theory that explains the past and current movements of the rocks at Earth’s surface and provides a framework for understanding its geologic history. Plate movements are responsible for most continental and ocean-floor features and for the distribution of most rocks and minerals within Earth’s crust.
MS-ESS1.C.3 ( Middle School Earth and Space Sciences ): Tectonic processes continually generate new ocean sea floor at ridges and destroy old sea floor at trenches.

MS-ESS2.B.3 ( Middle School Earth and Space Sciences ): Maps of ancient land and water patterns, based on investigations of rocks and fossils, make clear how Earth’s plates have moved great distances, collided, and spread apart.
