Earth Science Class Mrs. Moore Lesson Plans October 29th - Nov 2nd

Period 2,4, and 9 Monday and Wednesday
Period 3,5, and 10 Tuesday and Thursday
All Classes Friday

Earth’s Systems (Geology)
  1. Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence from rock strata for how the geologic time scale is used to organize Earth’s 4.6 billion-year-old history
  2. Develop a model to describe the cycling of Earth’s materials and the flow of energy that drives this process
  3. Construct an explanation based on evidence for how geoscience processes have changed Earth’s surface at varying time and spatial scales
  4. Analyze and interpret data on the distribution of fossils and rocks, continental shapes, and seafloor structures to provide evidence of the past plate motions
  5. Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for how the uneven distributions of Earth’s mineral, energy, groundwater resources are the result of past and current geoscience processes

Monday/ Tuesday -  Passback homework and collect missing work!
  1. Student will start with dipping their cotton balls in the salt water to continue our petrification process. Students will have time to look at common Illinois fossils, minerals, and rock samples.
  2. Common Illinois Fossils will be shown and a slide presentation will follow with a note sheet.
  3. Review our Seven Geological Principles and practice relative dating. A review packet is available to any who want it.  We will touch on the four unconformities - Para, Non, disconformity, angular.
  4. Absolute dating with pennies and graphing. Graphing will include correct title, x and y axis, key, and overall presentation of material.
  5. Homework is the absolute sheet we did not get to last week.  A paper copy will be in class but it is also clipped to skyward program.

Wednesday/ Thursday
  1. Student will start with dipping their cotton balls in the salt water to continue our petrification process.
  2. Continue with a review of relative dating and absolute dating. Followed by a short skyward assignment. If we have time we will again discuss unconformities in nature.
  3. Students will walk around the room looking at the 15 common mineral samples, common Illinois fossils, and rocks samples.  We will discuss what they tell us about the past and weather we can relatively date the items or can we absolutely date the samples.
  4. We will create molds of pennies in class.
  5. We will graph the division of time on a spreadsheet - New terms; Precambrian Era, Paleozoic Era, Mesozoic Era, Cenozoic Era.
  6. Homework is a sheet with the mineral names that need to be matched with a common use. Paper copy in class.

Friday - ALL classes

  1. Student will start with dipping their cotton balls in the salt water to continue our petrification process.
  2. We will dig out our molds and create our casts of the pennies in class
  3. Students will play a review game with the 6 mineral types, 7 geologic principles, and 8 common Illinois fossils.
  4. If we have time we will color sheets that diagram unconformities.
